Pile of paperwork on desk - How long does debt review last?
How long does debt review last? Until your debts are paid - often a few years, longer with a home loan. You exit with a clearance certificate.

Debt review lasts until the debts in your plan are paid up, which usually means around three to five years for unsecured debts and longer if your home loan is included, because there is no fixed legal maximum: the term depends on how much you owe, the negotiated instalments and interest, and whether you keep to the plan each month.

Unsecured debts (loans, cards, accounts) are often cleared within around three to five years. A bond can stretch the process to its natural end because you are repaying a large asset at a reduced rate.

This page explains what sets your timeline, whether debt review expires on its own, and how to finish faster.

What determines how long it lasts

Your debt review timeline depends on:

  • How much you owe. More debt means a longer plan.
  • Your negotiated instalment. A lower monthly payment clears debt more slowly.
  • Interest rates after negotiation. Lower interest means more of each payment clears the balance.
  • Whether a home loan is included. Bonds run for years, so they extend the journey.
  • Sticking to the plan. Missed payments lengthen everything.

There is no legislated maximum. The plan runs until the debts in it are settled.

Typical timelines

Debt type in planTypical duration
Unsecured only (loans, cards, accounts)Around 3 to 5 years
With vehicle financeUntil the vehicle is paid, often 4 to 6 years
With a home loanCan run to the bond's term

These are general ranges, not promises. Your counsellor can estimate your own timeline from your restructuring plan.

Does debt review expire on its own?

No. Debt review does not lapse or expire automatically after a set number of years. It ends only when your debts are paid and your counsellor issues a Form 19 clearance certificate, or when a court withdraws the order.

This is why you should never just stop paying and assume the process will fall away. It will not - you need the clearance certificate to have the flag removed.

How to finish faster

You can shorten debt review by:

  • Paying a little extra each month when you can, so balances drop faster.
  • Using bonuses or windfalls to settle smaller debts (tell your counsellor first).
  • Keeping every payment on time so no arrears build up.
  • Settling some creditors directly where allowed and getting paid-up letters to give your counsellor.

The sooner your debts are paid, the sooner you reach your clearance certificate and a clean profile.

Frequently asked questions

How long does debt review last in South Africa?

Until your debts are paid up. Unsecured debts often clear in around three to five years; including a home loan can extend it to the bond's term. There is no fixed legal maximum.

Does debt review expire after 5 years?

No. Debt review does not expire automatically after any set period. It ends only when your debts are settled and your counsellor issues a clearance certificate, or a court withdraws the order.

How long does debt review stay on your name?

The debt-review flag stays on your profile while you are in the process and is removed once you finish and receive your Form 19 clearance certificate, typically within about 21 business days of the bureaus being notified.

Can I finish debt review early?

Yes, by paying off your debts sooner. Extra payments, windfalls and settling smaller debts (with your counsellor's knowledge) all shorten the term. Once everything is paid, you qualify for your clearance certificate.

Why does debt review take so long with a home loan?

A bond is a large debt repaid over many years at a reduced rate during debt review, so the plan naturally runs longer when a home loan is included.

What happens when debt review ends?

Your counsellor issues a Form 19 clearance certificate, notifies the NCR and all credit bureaus, and the debt-review flag is removed from your profile, usually within about 21 business days.
