Office meeting two people - NCR-registered debt counsellors: how to verify yours
NCR-registered debt counsellors are the only people who can legally run debt review. Verify yours on the NCR register at ncr.org.za before signing anything.

NCR-registered debt counsellors are the only professionals legally allowed to run debt review in South Africa, each registered with the National Credit Regulator and holding a registration number you can check on the NCR's public register at ncr.org.za, so verifying registration before you sign is the single best step to avoid scams and an invalid process.

Many firms advertise debt help, but only a registered counsellor can lawfully restructure your debt and issue your clearance certificate.

This page explains what registration means, how to verify it and the red flags of an unregistered operator.

What 'NCR-registered' means

A debt counsellor must register with the National Credit Regulator to operate. Registration means they have met the NCR's requirements, are bound by its rules and fee ceilings, and can be held accountable through the NCR's complaints process.

Only a registered counsellor can lawfully:

  • Lodge your debt-review application (Form 16).
  • Negotiate with your creditors and the court.
  • Issue your Form 19 clearance certificate.

An unregistered 'debt help' operator cannot do any of this validly.

How to verify your counsellor

  1. Ask for the counsellor's NCR registration number (usually in the form 'NCRDC' followed by digits).
  2. Go to ncr.org.za and check the number against the public register of registered debt counsellors.
  3. Confirm the name matches the firm or person you are dealing with.
  4. If anything does not match, or they cannot give you a number, do not sign.

This takes a few minutes and protects you from fraud and invalid 'debt review'.

Well-known names and smaller counsellors

Large firms such as DebtBusters, Meerkat, Debt Rescue and National Debt Advisors are registered debt counsellors, and so are many smaller independent counsellors across the country. Size is not the test - registration is.

A smaller registered counsellor can serve you just as validly as a large brand. What matters is that you can verify the NCR registration and that they explain your fees clearly upfront.

Red flags of an unregistered operator

Be cautious if a 'debt counsellor':

  • Cannot give you an NCR registration number to verify.
  • Promises to 'remove' debt review instantly for a large fee.
  • Is vague about the regulated fees.
  • Pressures you to sign immediately.
  • Asks for large upfront payments beyond the R50 application fee.

Any of these means stop and verify on ncr.org.za before parting with money or signing anything.

Frequently asked questions

What are NCR-registered debt counsellors?

They are debt counsellors registered with the National Credit Regulator and legally allowed to run debt review. Only a registered counsellor can lodge your application, negotiate with creditors and issue your clearance certificate.

How do I check if a debt counsellor is NCR-registered?

Ask for their NCR registration number (usually starting with NCRDC) and check it on the public register at ncr.org.za. Confirm the name matches. If you cannot verify it, do not sign.

Are big debt review companies registered with the NCR?

Yes. Firms like DebtBusters, Meerkat, Debt Rescue and National Debt Advisors are NCR-registered, and so are many smaller counsellors. Always verify the specific registration regardless of brand size.

Can a smaller debt counsellor be as good as a big firm?

Yes. Registration, not size, is what makes a counsellor valid. A smaller registered counsellor can serve you just as well, provided you verify their NCR registration and they disclose fees clearly.

What are the red flags of an unregistered debt counsellor?

No verifiable NCR number, promises of instant removal for a fee, vagueness about regulated fees, pressure to sign now, and large upfront payments beyond the R50 application fee. Verify on ncr.org.za before paying.

Why does NCR registration matter?

Only a registered counsellor can run a valid debt review and issue your clearance certificate. Dealing with an unregistered operator risks an invalid process and exposes you to scams.
